JMUConnect
JMU Connect App Prototype
Overview
JMU Connect is a student-focused app designed to facilitate connections and collaboration within James Madison University’s School of Media Arts and Design. The app helps students discover peers with similar interests, share resources, and foster a stronger sense of community within the program.
My Role
I led the full design process for JMU Connect, from user research to final prototypes. I conducted student interviews, developed personas, created wireframes, and designed interactive prototypes to ensure the app met the specific needs of the SMAD community.
Tools
Figma (wireframing, UI design, prototyping)
Adobe XD (additional prototyping)
UserTesting / Surveys (for feedback and validation)
Process
1. Research & Discovery – Conducted interviews and surveys with SMAD students to understand their challenges, preferences, and desired features for a connection app.
2. User Personas & Journey Mapping – Created personas and mapped typical user journeys to guide the app’s structure and functionality.
3. Wireframing & UI Design – Designed wireframes and user interfaces with a focus on clarity, usability, and an engaging experience.
4. Interactive Prototyping – Built high-fidelity interactive prototypes to simulate real app interactions and validate design decisions.
5. Testing & Iteration – Conducted usability testing with students, gathered feedback, and iterated on designs to refine functionality and visual appeal.
Deliverables
User personas and journey maps
Low- and high-fidelity wireframes
Interactive prototypes for testing and presentation
Final UI designs showcasing navigation, connectivity features, and user engagement
Outcome
JMU Connect demonstrated a clear solution for student networking within SMAD, providing an intuitive, user-centered platform for peer connection and collaboration. The project showcased my ability to manage the full design lifecycle, apply user-centered design principles, and create interactive digital experiences from concept to prototype.
Awards: My team won 2nd place in the Mobile Applications category at the BEA Festival, recognizing the app’s innovation and design excellence.
